City of Gainesville
[ Bonham | Denison | Durant | Gainesville | Pottsboro | Sherman | Whitesboro ]

Gainesville’s rich heritage combined with its diverse business opportunities have created a unique community that nearly 15,000 people call “home.”

Gainesville credits part of its growth to a variety of attractions and educational institutions including Historic Gainesville, the Schmitz Museum, the Morton Museum, Prime Outlets at Gainesville, Frank Buck Zoo and North Central Texas College.

Founded in 1850, much of downtown Gainesville was developed in the 1880s. The notable California Street hails from the early days when “forty-niners” traveled through to search for gold in the West.

Gainesville’s rich heritage is evident in the historic district on Church, Denton and Lindsay Streets. More than 30 restored Victorian houses, built by cattle and cotton barons, line these streets and others throughout town. Two bed and breakfasts plus antique and specialty shops add to the city’s historical fame.

Excellent shopping adventures await at the more than 85 outlet stores at the Prime Outlets at Gainesville on Interstate 35. The Gainesville Shopping Center on US82 also offers great variety.

Visitors are encouraged to stop by the Frank Buck Zoo after completing their shopping. The zoo is located in Leonard Park—one block west of I-35 on California Street.

Other area attractions include Lake Kiowa, Lake Texoma, Moss Lake and Lake Ray Roberts—all within 15 miles. The lakes plus Gainesville’s two golf courses, Gainesville Municipal Golf Course and Lake Kiowa Golf Course add up to plenty of outdoor recreation.

Gainesville is also known for its excellent academic resources. North Central Texas College is one of the most progressive and well-rounded community colleges in the U.S.
