Sherman, the "Land of Lures & Legends," is known for its historic landmarks.

When Texoma visitors get their fill of sun and water, they head for historic Sherman, Texas, where the sights, shopping and special events offer a fulfilling change of pace. Located 15 miles southeast of the lake, off US75, Sherman is only 65 miles from downtown Dallas. The town was named after Gen. Sidney Sherman, the Texas Republic cavalry officer credited with the famous slogan, “Remember the Alamo!”

Sherman is known for its historic landmarks, particularly the C.S. Roberts House, a featured attraction on the Historic Driving Tour Map. This map guides visitors on a tour through history with exceptional architectural landmarks.

History buffs will enjoy the Red River Historical Museum, housed in the c.1914 former Carnegie Library, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum features exhibits depicting the rich and colorful history of Grayson County and North Texas. Several other interesting museums and exhibits include the Museum of American Victorian Furniture, one of the best collections in the nation, and the Harber Wildlife Museum.

Sherman is proud of its historical significance, but it’s also a modern city with a thriving present and promising future. It boasts one of Texas’ highest per capita incomes and constitutes the largest commercial market between Dallas and Tulsa. It’s home to two colleges, the nationally-acclaimed liberal arts college, Austin College, and a top-notch community college, Grayson County College. The community playhouse, Finley Cultural Center, provides top entertainment throughout the year as well as the annual Community Series which includes the annual Sherman Symphony Pops Concert of Christmas music and carols the first weekend of December. Shopping opportunities abound in Sherman. Midway Mall is anchored by Dillard’s, J.C.Penney, Mervyn’s and Sears, as well as a large movie theater.

Sherman is the county seat of Grayson County and, with the guidance of the Sherman Main Street Project, has developed many shopping treasures downtown. Kelly Square, a tri-level shopping center on the courthouse square, is home to a bakery, art gallery, restaurant and several specialty shops. Antique hunters will want to be sure to pick up a copy of the Sherman Antique Guide.

Annual events include the Texoma Expo (last weekend of February) the Sherman Preservation League Tour of Homes (3rd weekend in April), Annual Grayson County Fair (2nd weekend of October), National Aerobatics Championship (first week of September), Sherman Arts Festival (3rd Saturday of September), Sherman’s Downtown Christmas Parade (December) and the Annual Altrusa Pilgrimage of Homes (2nd Sunday in December).
