Boater Regulations
Texas Boater Regulations
There are many regulations for Texas boaters and the following highlights a few of those regulations. To begin, any type of watercraft that is operated by one or more persons whether they are sitting in the boat or standing on a boat and that includes jet skis or wet bikes is required to wear a USCG approved wearable Personal Floatation Device. (PFD) Anyone boating in the Texas area must not operate while intoxicated or having a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher. Failure to submit a specimen to determine blood alcohol content may result in suspension of a driver’s license. Boaters must not operate any vessel or manipulate any water skis, aquaplane or similar device with disregard of the rights and safety of others or at a speed that may endanger any person or property. Boaters are not to swim or dive within two hundred yards of any sightseeing boat unless within an enclosed area. Boaters are not to operate within 50 feet of a “Diver Down Flag” or operate a boat within 150 feet of a Diver Down Flag. Violation of these regulations is punishable, upon conviction, by a fine of not less than $200 or more than $2,000 or by confinement in jail not to exceed 180 days or both. Any regulation applied to regular motorboats also applies to personal watercraft. It is not legal for any person to operate a personal watercraft at night, which consists of sunset to sunrise, nor can one operate a personal watercraft within 50 feet of another personal watercraft, motorboat, vessel, platform, person or shore except at headway speed without creating a swell or wake. Furthermore, it is unlawful for any person to operate a motorboat or personal watercraft at a speed greater than is reasonable. Regulations also state that it is unlawful to operate a personal watercraft within any area designated as a bathing area, fishing area or swimming area.
Texas Boater’s Education Course
With so many people enjoying the lakes in Texas every year, it is critically important that boaters educate themselves about boating skills. The Texas Boater Education Course stresses boating safety and responsibility. The Texas Boater Education Program provides tips on choosing the right boat, legal requirements for a boat, navigation rules and aids, specifics about getting underway, docking, anchoring and trailering in addition to handling accidents and emergencies. Boating courses are taught by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, US Power Squadron and trained volunteer instructors, as well as teachers, and game wardens. The subjects cover areas involving weather, basic water safety, what to do if there is a fire on board, water sports and much more.
Oklahoma Boater’s Education Course
Because many more people are out on the lakes and waters of Oklahoma, it is important that everyone operating a boat take a course on boating skills. The Oklahoma Boater’s Course features easy-to-understand boating safety instructions coupled with hundreds of detailed illustrations that help to improve boating skills that help a boater become a more prepared seaman. The online boating safety course is based on the Boat Oklahoma – Your Guide to Responsible Boating. Boat Ed is the only boating safety education course and exam that develops print materials on behalf of state government boating and boater safety agencies. In this course boaters learn step by step instruction about everything that can improve their boating skills. It covers everything from getting out on the water to navigation and safe operation, legal requirements of boating, boating emergencies and enjoying water sports. The education course features context-based video instruction that enhances retention and motivation. Live-action videos of boat and private water craft operators prepare boaters for outings that use good judgment, in addition to how one should react to unexpected challenges.
It is the boaters’ responsibility to know what regulations apply to the body of water they are fishing.
